Designing Rubrics That Reduce Bias
Bias creeps in through vague wording, context mismatch, and uncalibrated raters. Good rubrics counteract this by defining observable behaviors, clarifying stakes, and standardizing judgments. Use inclusive, plain language; specify settings where behaviors should appear; and provide examples from diverse work styles. Run pilot ratings with multiple reviewers, compare disagreements, and refine criteria. The outcome is not perfection, but dependable, explainable decisions everyone can revisit confidently.
